UN General Assembly Opens Annual Cuba Embargo Debate: 34th Vote on Resolution Demanding U.S. Lift Embargo Set for Oct. 28

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · World · GSM News

The UN General Assembly opened its annual debate on the U.S. embargo against Cuba on Oct. 27, with a vote scheduled for Oct. 28 on a resolution demanding that the United States end the embargo. It will be the 34th time the Assembly votes on the resolution; since 1992, the body has adopted a similar text nearly every year calling for an end to the economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba. The resolutions are not legally binding.

The U.S. embargo on Cuba dates to the 1960s and is among the longest-running unilateral sanctions regimes in the world. Cuba says the embargo has severely damaged its economy and people's livelihoods, while successive U.S. administrations have cited Cuba's political system and human rights record in maintaining the sanctions, with only brief periods of easing in between.

Ahead of this year's vote, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez accused the U.S. State Department of pressuring countries to change their votes, calling the pressure unprecedented, while the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations urged countries to vote against the resolution. Member states will state their positions during the debate, and the Oct. 28 vote is being closely watched.
