The City of Rancho Palos Verdes, a coastal city in Los Angeles County, California, is recruiting a Director of Public Works. The annual salary range is $183,796 to $238,935, with placement negotiable based on qualifications and experience, plus benefits including CalPERS retirement. The Director is an executive-level, at-will position reporting directly to the City Manager, overseeing all activities of the Public Works Department. The department has 20 full-time staff across three divisions — Capital Projects, Operations, and Maintenance — and a General Fund budget of $7.9 million for fiscal year 2026-27. It is responsible for the planning, development and maintenance of city assets including public buildings, parks, trails, roads, street trees, storm drains and sanitary sewers. The Director also develops and manages the department's annual budget and its five-year Capital Improvement Program, pursues county, state and federal grants, and prepares the department for emergency response.
A typical qualifying profile combines a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, business or public administration, or a related field, with at least five years of management or administrative experience in engineering, public works operations and maintenance, business or public administration, or a related field. Registration as a Professional Engineer in California is highly desirable, and experience working with the California Coastal Commission is a plus but not required.
Rancho Palos Verdes covers about 13.6 square miles on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and has roughly 41,000 residents. It is known for its low-density neighborhoods, coastal bluffs, the Point Vicente Lighthouse and the Terranea Resort.
