Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · World · GSM News

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone with Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino on October 27, according to a readout released by the State Department spokesperson's office. The two discussed Panama's recovery from this month's earthquake, regional issues, and the election of the next United Nations secretary-general.

The readout said the U.S.-Panama partnership has deepened since the October 9 earthquake. Within 24 hours of the quake, the United States delivered humanitarian, logistical, communications and technical assistance, including food, drinking water and an urban search-and-rescue team, and Washington said it will continue to stand with Panama as recovery proceeds.

The United States has since sent additional experts and relief supplies for damage assessment and reconstruction; U.S. earthquake assistance to Panama has previously been reported at $6 million in total.
