The U.S. Department of Education announced on October 27 that Secretary of Education Linda McMahon has appointed six new members to the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB) and reappointed Tennessee Representative Mark White as the board's chair. NAGB oversees the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as the Nation's Report Card, setting NAEP achievement levels and determining which grades and subjects are assessed and what content is included.

The new appointees are Arkansas Secretary of Education Jacob Oliva; Jacob Dykes, principal of Ocean Springs High School in Mississippi; Mark Miller, an eighth-grade math teacher and math department chair at Cheyenne Mountain Junior High in Colorado Springs, Colorado, who previously served one term on the board from 2018 to 2022; Dr. Melia Franklin, a Missouri educational assessment expert and senior associate at EdMetric who formerly directed English language arts and world languages at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; Michael Way, a division president at Charter One, which provides services to charter, private and district schools, who was also elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2024; and Lauren Archer, an elementary civics educator with Westfield Public Schools in New Jersey.

White represents Tennessee's District 83, covering part of Shelby County near Memphis, and has served in the state General Assembly since 2010. He chairs the House Education Administration Committee and is a former science teacher, K-8 principal and small-business owner who co-founded the Global Children's Educational Foundation, which assists impoverished children in Panama.

McMahon said the appointees, ranging from state officials to local principals and educators, will help lead the Nation's Report Card, and that her job as secretary is to empower the state and local leaders who know what is best for students. She said future NAEP assessments are essential to guiding critical improvements in K-12 education outcomes.
