Pope Leo XIV Sends Video Message to Assisi Peace Meeting: War Can Never Be Waged in the Name of God

Pope Leo XIV on Oct. 27 sent a video message to the International Meeting for Peace in the Spirit of Assisi, Italy, urging participants to be 'unarmed instruments' of the Lord's peace and stressing that war can never be waged in the name of God, Vatican News reported.
'For us believers, to fight in the name of religion means attacking religion itself,' the Pope said. 'There is no such thing as a holy war: only peace is holy.' The three-day meeting, organized by the Community of Sant'Egidio under the theme 'Unarmed and Disarming Peace,' concluded on Oct. 27 and marked the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace convened by St. John Paul II in Assisi in 1986. Nearly 400 leaders from 53 countries took part. Recovering from surgery, the Pope was unable to attend in person; he called on believers to keep the 'spirit of Assisi' alive, rebuilding peace everywhere through dialogue and prayer rather than preparing for more wars.
