SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Opens Free Public Tours on October 30: Two Sessions, Photo ID Required; November Registration Opens November 6 at 9 A.M.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, at 2575 Sand Hill Rd in Menlo Park, San Mateo County, California, will open its doors for public tours on Friday, October 30, with two sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The tours are free, with registration through Eventbrite. Participants must be at least 12 years old; those aged 12 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire tour. Visitors must present a government-issued photo ID (a REAL ID-compliant credential or a passport) and the QR code from their registration confirmation email.
SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory operated by Stanford University. Its two-mile linear accelerator contributed to three Nobel Prizes in physics, including the discoveries of quarks and the tau lepton, and the laboratory today hosts major facilities such as the LCLS, the world's most powerful X-ray laser. Guided public tours are held regularly — typically on the last two Fridays of each month — and take visitors inside the laboratory's experimental facilities for an introduction to accelerator science and frontier physics research. Visitors must wear closed-toe shoes, and bags may not exceed 12 by 6 by 12 inches.
How to attend: Tours are free but space is limited, and registration is through Eventbrite. The November sessions fall on November 20 and November 27, with registration opening on Eventbrite at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 6. Details and the registration link are on the Public Tours page of the SLAC website; note the ID and chaperone requirements before booking.
