700 Waste Management Workers in Los Angeles and Orange Counties Ratify New Contract: Another Win for Teamsters Local 396

The Teamsters announced on Oct. 26 that about 700 Waste Management workers in Los Angeles and Orange counties, represented by Teamsters Local 396, have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement. It is the local's latest deal in Southern California's sanitation industry: a contract covering about 1,900 Republic Services workers was ratified shortly before, as GSM reported on Oct. 23.
Victor Mineros, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 396 and Director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division, said rank-and-file engagement was key to securing the strong contract, adding that the local is still bargaining new agreements for hundreds of workers at other regional haulers, including WARE Disposal, Athens Services, CR&R and Park Disposal. Luis Isordia, a relief driver at Waste Management, said the win did not come easily.
Waste Management is the largest sanitation corporation in the United States, with $25.2 billion in revenue last year. Founded in 1903, the Teamsters represent about 1.3 million workers in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. (Source: Teamsters release via PR Newswire)
