UC San Diego's Free Holocaust Living History Workshop Continues Nov. 19: UCLA's Michael Rothberg on Germany's Contested Holocaust Memory, In Person and Online

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · Events · GSM News

The University of California, San Diego — in La Jolla, San Diego County, California — continues its 2026-27 Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLHW) lecture series on Thursday, November 19, 2026, at 5 p.m. PT. UCLA professor Michael Rothberg will speak on "Holocaust Memory and its Discontents: The Case of Germany." The talk takes place in person at Geisel Library on the UC San Diego campus and online at the same time. All HLHW programs are free and open to the public; registration is required, through the UC San Diego Library events calendar. The series, now in its 18th season, is presented by the UC San Diego Library together with the university's Jewish Studies Program.

Rothberg's talk examines how Germany has remembered — and argued about — the Holocaust over the eight decades since the Second World War: the memorials, trials, school curricula, and public controversies through which the country has reckoned with its past, and the new disputes that have arisen as the era of living witnesses ends and Germany itself has become a country of immigration. Rothberg is the 1939 Society Samuel Goetz Chair in Holocaust Studies and a professor of English and comparative literature at UCLA; his book "Multidirectional Memory: Remembering the Holocaust in the Age of Decolonization" (2009) is a widely cited study of how memories of different historical traumas interact. The November 19 program is sponsored by July Galper.

This season's series explores how the Holocaust is understood and remembered today: it opened on October 22 with Ruth Franklin on Anne Frank, and continues on January 21, 2027, with Anna Hájková on love and identity under Nazi persecution, February 25 with survivor Maria Jutasi Coleman on wartime Budapest, and April 15 with historian Jan T. Gross on the Warsaw Ghetto fighters. Deborah Hertz, the Herman Wouk Chair in Modern Jewish Studies at UC San Diego, notes that continued study of the Holocaust illuminates historical patterns, individual heroism, and state persecution. Readers who wish to attend the November 19 talk — in person or online — should register in advance via the UC San Diego Library's events calendar.
