Anaheim Breaks Ground on $4.5 Million River Park, First Piece of the $200 Million-Plus OC River Walk

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 · California · GSM News

The City of Anaheim, in Orange County, California, broke ground on October 7 on River Park, a 3.4-acre, $4.5 million park alongside Angel Stadium of Anaheim that is the first piece of the city's long-term riverfront reimagining known as OC River Walk. The park is expected to open in late 2027.

Under the city's plan, River Park will include a playground, walking trails, picnic tables, interpretive panels on native plants and wildlife, and a canoe sculpture symbolizing the ti'at rafts used by the Indigenous Gabrielino-Tongva nation to navigate the Santa Ana River. When finished, it will be Anaheim's 69th city park and the sixth in the Platinum Triangle, the apartment district around the stadium, Honda Center and the ARTIC transit hub.

OC River Walk is a multiyear proposal to transform two miles of the Santa Ana River alongside the stadium and Honda Center with year-round water, parks, plazas, walking bridges, public art and trails, at an estimated cost of more than $200 million, to be developed over coming years with potential federal, state and regional funding. The River Park stretch runs between Orangewood Avenue and the 57 Freeway to just past the landmark Big A, which will serve as a backdrop for the new park.

The city also recalled the site's history: from 2016 to 2018 the area was part of a large homelessness encampment along the Santa Ana River Trail that numbered about 1,000 people at its peak. In 2018, Orange County and Anaheim cleared the encampment while offering shelter, services and other help to those who had been living there. The same land is now being rebuilt as a public riverfront park.
