Culture: The Met Opens Tiffany Design Drawings Exhibition, Nearly 120 Works on View Through February 7, 2027

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, New York, has opened Designing the Gilded Age: Drawings from the Studios of Louis C. Tiffany in Galleries 691-693 at The Met Fifth Avenue: the exhibition runs from October 22, 2026 through February 7, 2027, bringing together nearly 120 works from the museum's collection along with a select group of key loans, in the first major exhibition dedicated to the design drawings of Tiffany Studios, including watercolor designs for stained-glass windows, lamps, mosaics and interiors.
According to the museum's exhibition release, a centerpiece is the Chrysler Museum of Art's monumental stained-glass window Woman in a Pergola with Wisteria (1911), reunited with its original wisteria transoms, recently discovered in a private home in Arizona, in their first presentation together in at least half a century. The exhibition is organized by Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, the Met's curator of American decorative arts, and is made possible by Tiffany & Co.
Director Max Hollein said the Met's holdings of Tiffany design drawings are unparalleled and reveal how some of the most iconic works of American decorative art came to life. The curators note that Tiffany Studios' output came from a collaborative network that included historically uncredited immigrant and women designers such as Agnes Northrop, Clara Driscoll and Julia Munson. The show is organized thematically across three galleries covering domestic interiors, ecclesiastical settings and public and commercial commissions, with interpretation on the conservation of the fragile works on paper.
