NIH Awards Record 1,648 Early-Career Investigators in Fiscal 2026 and Launches Drive to Recruit 100 Young Principal Investigators

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced on October 8 that it awarded R01-equivalent research grants to 1,648 early-stage investigators in fiscal year 2026, the most ever recorded, and launched the Generation Discovery initiative to recruit 100 early-career principal investigators into its Intramural Research Program over the next three years.

NIH said the 1,648 figure is 24 percent above the ten-year average of 1,331. The announcement was made at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's 'Science: A New Golden Age Summit.' 'NIH is building the future of American biomedical science,' said NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya. The agency also noted that the median age of first-time R01-equivalent principal investigators has risen from 38 to 39 in fiscal 1995 to 42 in fiscal 2025, making support for researchers at the start of their careers a focus of the effort.

Alongside the funding and recruitment moves, NIH announced several new initiatives: its first metascience office to study how the research funding system itself works; the R3PEATS program emphasizing rigor and reproducibility; X-Labs built with the National Science Foundation; the Bio-Genesis Mission applying new tools including super intelligence (SI); and broader use of the longer, more flexible R35 grant mechanism.
