Freddie Mac Survey: 30-Year Mortgage Rate Eased to 7.32 Percent as of October 22, 15-Year at 6.68 Percent in First Weekly Decline Since August

Freddie Mac released its Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) in McLean, Virginia, on October 22, showing the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at 7.32 percent as of October 22, 2026, down from 7.40 percent the prior week, while the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.68 percent, down from 6.71 percent. The decline was the first weekly drop in the 30-year rate since late August, after the prior week's 7.40 percent marked a fall high.
'The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage declined this week, offering some relief to prospective homebuyers,' said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac's Chief Economist. Rates remain well above year-earlier levels: a year ago at this time, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.19 percent and the 15-year averaged 5.44 percent.
The PMMS focuses on conventional, conforming, fully amortizing home purchase loans for borrowers who put 20 percent down and have excellent credit. Freddie Mac said its mission is to make home possible for families across the nation, and that since 1970 it has helped tens of millions of families buy, rent or keep their home. GSM reported the survey's 30-year reading of 7.40 percent on October 15; this week's release is the following week's new reading.
