Morton Salt Mine Beneath Lake Erie Shut Down After Flooding: At Least 77 Miners Laid Off on Oct. 28, Road Salt Deliveries Disrupted

LAKE COUNTY, Ohio — The Morton Salt mine beneath Lake Erie, about 2,000 feet below the surface near Fairport Harbor, has been forced to close after severe flooding, laying off at least 77 miners on October 28 and disrupting winter road salt supplies.
The mine has operated since 1992, with rock and sediment separating the lake water from the salt body. A large inflow of water struck the mine last week, forcing underground workings to close; federal mine inspectors are investigating the cause. No one was injured, but road salt deliveries scheduled to begin early this week cannot proceed on schedule because of the shutdown.
It is not yet clear whether the mine will reopen. As northern states stock up on salt for winter, the shutdown affects not only the laid-off miners' livelihoods but also local road de-icing salt supplies for the coming winter.
