Oregon's 137-Year-Old Cottage Grove Sentinel Publishes Its Final Edition on Oct. 28, the Third Lane County Paper to Close This Year

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 · Society · GSM News

COTTAGE GROVE, Lane County, Oregon — The Cottage Grove Sentinel published its final edition on October 28, ending 137 years of publication. It is the third Lane County newspaper to close this year, after Springfield's Chronicle and The Highway 58 Herald shut down earlier in the year.

The Sentinel was acquired in 2023 by Salem-based Country Media. CEO Joe Warren said in the October 21 edition announcing the closure that the company had tried advertiser and subscriber advertising deals, special sections and discounted subscriptions to raise revenue but could not turn things around. Country Media's six other Oregon weeklies will continue publishing.

According to additional reporting by The Register-Guard, Cottage Grove resident Cindy Weeldreyer, who joined the Sentinel in 1990 as an Oregon State University intern, hopes to keep the paper alive and is exploring reviving it as a biweekly or monthly publication.
