UTEP Law School Receives $5 Million Matching Pledge on Oct. 28, Reaching Half of Its $20 Million Startup Goal

EL PASO, El Paso County, Texas — The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) law school effort moved forward on October 28, as the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation announced a $5 million matching pledge at the Texas Western Hall on campus; if the match is met, the gift's total effect will reach $10 million.
"We are closer than ever to having a law school in El Paso," President Heather Wilson said in a news release. Law firms including Flores Mendez, Farah, ScottHulse and Dallas-based KASTL have signed on to contribute. Earlier funding included a $5 million matching pledge from the Paul Foster Family Foundation in October 2025 and a $5 million gift from the law firm Tawney, Acosta and Chaparro in April 2026, bringing the project to half of its $20 million startup goal.
State Rep. Joe Moody plans to file a bill in the Texas legislative session opening in January 2027 to seek funding for a law school building; Wilson said that if funding is approved, the law school's first class would enroll in fall 2030.
