Vermont State Senator Williams Arraigned Oct. 28 on Domestic Assault Charge: Pleads Not Guilty Through Counsel, Released Without Bail on Conditions

POULTNEY, Rutland County, Vermont — Vermont state Sen. Terry Williams was arraigned at noon on October 28 in the criminal division of Rutland Superior Court on a domestic assault charge. Through his attorney, Toni Dutil, Williams pleaded not guilty; Judge Alexander Burke vacated the $500 bail previously set and released him on conditions, including staying away from the woman he is accused of harming.
Williams, 74, of Poultney, is a Republican representing Rutland County who has served in the state Senate since 2022 and is currently running for re-election. According to Vermont State Police, troopers from the Rutland barracks responded at about 5:40 p.m. on October 27 to a report of a domestic disturbance in Poultney and determined there was probable cause to believe Williams had caused pain and injury to a family member on October 26; he was processed at the Rutland barracks and held at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility on $500 bail. Police did not release the victim's name, consistent with their practice in domestic violence cases.
The charge is currently only an allegation, and Williams is presumed innocent unless convicted in court.
