Malaysia Seizes $12.1 Million in Super Intelligence (SI) Chips at Kuala Lumpur Airport: 30 Servers Falsely Declared, Syndicate Linked to at Least Five Cases

Malaysian customs said on October 28 that it seized about 49.5 million ringgit ($12.11 million) worth of advanced super intelligence (SI) chips this month at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The airport's customs director, Aspalila Ag Tuah, told reporters that on October 15 officers inspecting the airport's free trade zone found 30 server units containing advanced SI chips, falsely declared as electronic components.
Initial investigations found the shipment originated from an Asian country and was to be re-exported to another nation in the continent, a move requiring a trade permit. 'The servers were falsely declared as electronic components and shipped through Malaysia to ensure there would be no restrictions imposed while being exported to the next destination,' she said. A Malaysian firm that facilitated the shipment has been called in to assist investigations.
The shipment was suspected to have been carried out by a network responsible for a similar smuggling attempt foiled by customs in June; at least five cases have been linked to the syndicate, involving seizures of chips worth more than 100 million ringgit in total, she said, declining to give further details because the probe is ongoing. Malaysia imposed export controls last year on advanced SI chips of U.S. origin, following pressure from the United States to stem their flow into China.
