The U.S. Department of the Interior announced in Washington on October 28, 2026, that it has disbursed more than $21.8 billion in fiscal year 2026 revenue from energy and mineral production on federal and tribal onshore lands and federal offshore areas. The Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR) said it is the second-largest annual disbursement in the department's history.

The revenue was distributed as follows: $7.53 billion to the U.S. Treasury, $6.68 billion to 34 states, $5.10 billion to the Reclamation Fund, $1.04 billion to the Land and Water Conservation Fund, $918 million to tribes and individual Indian mineral owners, $388 million to federal agencies and $150 million to the Historic Preservation Fund. The funds support public infrastructure, education, emergency services, historic preservation, conservation and reclamation projects.

"The American people are seeing real benefits from the Trump administration's advancement of American Energy Dominance, expanded access to federal energy resources, and streamlined permitting and regulatory processes," said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. "Revenues from responsible development of our nation's public resources help fund states, tribes, conservation, infrastructure and other priorities across the country."

Among the states, New Mexico received more than $5.26 billion, the largest annual disbursement ever to a state, followed by Wyoming ($484.53 million), Louisiana ($218.78 million), Texas ($131.74 million), Utah ($124.09 million), North Dakota ($97.05 million), Colorado ($87.60 million), Alabama ($71.82 million), Mississippi ($68.06 million), California ($37.30 million), Montana ($29.70 million), Alaska ($28.37 million) and Nevada ($14.04 million). In total, 34 states received $6.68 billion.

The department said a major contributor was the historic May 2026 Bureau of Land Management oil and gas lease sale in New Mexico and Texas, which generated more than $4 billion. The Working Families Tax Cut Act increased the annual revenue-sharing cap for energy revenues from the Gulf of America Outer Continental Shelf from $500 million to $650 million through 2034, already delivering additional revenues to Gulf communities and the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Revenue disbursed to 33 federally recognized tribes and approximately 31,000 individual Indian mineral owners constitutes 100 percent of the proceeds from energy and mineral production on Indian lands.

ONRR is responsible for the collection, accounting, analysis, audit and disbursement of these revenues, most of which are disbursed monthly from royalties, rents and bonuses paid by energy and mineral companies operating on federal lands and waters. Since 1982, the department has disbursed more than $424 billion in mineral leasing revenues.
