Willie James Skipper, Jr., 42, of Boynton Beach, Florida, has been sentenced to 132 months (11 years) in federal prison for drug trafficking, firearms and arson offenses, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida announced. U.S. District Judge Melissa Damian imposed the sentence.

According to court records and evidence presented at trial, in November 2025 Skipper was under surveillance in a Palm Beach County drug trafficking investigation. While officers stood just feet away waiting for a tow truck to impound his vehicle, he poured gasoline on the vehicle and set it ablaze, triggering a major explosion that placed the officers and nearby members of the public at risk of catastrophic injury. He fled on foot and was subsequently apprehended. A search of the vehicle revealed distribution quantities of fentanyl disguised as oxycodone pills, crack cocaine, large amounts of cash and a loaded firearm concealed in hidden compartments.

A jury convicted him of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, and arson; he pleaded guilty to the remaining charges, including possession with intent to distribute cocaine and N-Dimethylpentylone. At trial, an expert testified that nearby propane tanks heightened the danger, and DNA evidence linked Skipper to the narcotics and firearm. Court records also established an earlier incident on August 29, 2024, in which he possessed a loaded firearm and distribution quantities of drugs, including six bags of N-Dimethylpentylone, 34 pieces of white rocks containing cocaine, and marijuana.

U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones said Skipper turned a drug trafficking investigation into a potentially deadly explosion. The FBI Miami Field Office, the ATF Miami Field Division and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Shannon O'Shea Darsch and Brian Ralston prosecuted the case, number 26-cr-80049.
