At Least 31 Killed, About 80 Injured as Two High-Speed Trains Collide in Spain's Toledo Province

Two high-speed trains collided on Wednesday morning in Toledo province, in Spain's central Castilla-La Mancha region, killing at least 31 people and injuring about 80, regional authorities said. Rescuers were still working at the scene and officials warned the death toll could rise.

According to the Associated Press, the crash occurred at about 9 a.m. local time on a flat stretch of track surrounded by fields between the towns of Urda and Los Yébenes. Regional spokeswoman Esther Padilla told state broadcaster TVE that the two trains, carrying hundreds of passengers, were traveling in the same direction from Madrid to Seville in southwestern Spain when one slammed into the rear of the other, which had stopped, knocking two of its cars off the track. One car was shredded into pieces, scattering debris down a gravel slope. The trains belonged to state-owned operator RENFE and private operator IRYO; Spanish media reported that the RENFE train rammed the stopped IRYO train. Padilla said the cause of the crash was not known.

Regional president Emiliano García-Page first confirmed 30 dead — 24 on the RENFE train and six on the IRYO train — and warned the toll would rise; the regional government later updated the confirmed death toll to at least 31, with at least 80 injured. Health Minister Mónica García said emergency workers were focusing on rescuing survivors and recovering bodies from the two most damaged cars, with the injured being taken to hospitals across the area. 'It was a high-speed impact, so we are expecting this to be a tragedy,' she told TVE. A military emergency brigade joined firefighters and police at the scene, and Urda mayor Manuel Galán said the town had been asked to prepare a sports pavilion to receive injured passengers.

Rail infrastructure operator ADIF said service between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia was suspended. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) postponed all 24 of Wednesday's Copa del Rey first-round matches 'as a show of respect and solidarity with all the victims,' with new dates to be announced. A European Commission spokeswoman said the EU stood ready to support the Spanish authorities in any way needed.

It was the second major train accident in Spain this year. Trains of the same two companies, RENFE and IRYO, were also involved in a deadly crash in southern Spain in January, whose investigation has not yet concluded.
