Gainesville Man Trai Williams Sentenced to 25 Years in Federal Prison in Fentanyl Overdose Death Case Involving Carfentanil

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

In Gainesville, Florida, Trai Williams, 28, of Gainesville, was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison after previously pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute more than 100 grams of carfentanil, a fentanyl analogue, and other controlled substances. John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, announced the sentence.

Evidence at sentencing established that on June 24, 2024, Williams sold counterfeit pressed pills containing fentanyl to Elijah Brantley, who sold them to an individual in Green Cove Springs, Florida, who overdosed and died from the pills on June 25, 2024. Brantley has a pending charge in the Middle District of Florida for distribution of a controlled substance causing a death, for which he is presumed innocent.

Court documents also show that on October 2, 2025, Williams fled from police through multiple counties at speeds in excess of 120 mph, throwing cocaine and other drugs from the vehicle during the pursuit. After his vehicle was immobilized and he was apprehended, law enforcement searched his Gainesville apartment and found over 156 grams of carfentanil and other substances containing heroin, fentanyl, promethazine, codeine and cocaine, along with over $55,000 in cash. According to a DEA officer safety alert, carfentanil is a synthetic opioid originally developed to tranquilize large animals such as elephants; the DEA estimates it is 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times stronger than fentanyl.

U.S. Attorney Heekin said the trafficker's days of flooding the streets with deadly poison are over. Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya said the 25-year sentence sends a strong message that those who distribute these dangerous drugs will be held accountable. The case was investigated jointly by the DEA and the Gainesville Alachua County Drug Task Force, with assistance from the sheriff's offices in Alachua, Hamilton, Columbia and Clay counties, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Adam Hapner and James A. McCain as part of Operation Take Back America.
