Wednesday, October 28, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

Shamar Wayquis Evans, 35, also known as "sly dollar," of Oxford in Granville County, North Carolina, was sentenced to eight years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and possession with intent to sell crack cocaine, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced.

Evans pleaded guilty on June 16, 2026. He is a previously convicted felon with several North Carolina state court convictions, including assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and selling heroin in 2017 and in 2018, and was therefore prohibited from possessing a firearm.

According to court documents, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Oxford Police Department investigated Evans's drug-trafficking activities and conducted multiple controlled purchases of crack from him. On January 3, 2025, officers executed search warrants at two residences connected to Evans. At the first residence, officers found a firearm and drug paraphernalia in his bedroom. At the second residence, officers located Evans with 14 grams of crack inside his jacket.

U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan imposed the sentence. U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle said law enforcement had removed Evans from the community and that the case demonstrates a commitment to holding accountable those who endanger neighborhoods through violence and deadly drugs. ATF Special Agent in Charge Alicia Jones said a convicted felon possessing a gun increases the threat of violence. Oxford Police Chief Brandon Goins said the case reflects sustained collaboration among local, state, and federal law enforcement. The case, No. 5:25CR00238FL-1, was investigated by the ATF and the Oxford Police Department.
