Kansas Health Care Company Medova Forfeits About $23 Million as Roughly 7,000 Premium Payers Receive Compensation

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Kansas announced on October 28 that its Asset Forfeiture Division has obtained an order against Kansas-based Medova Healthcare Financial Group and its principals, forfeiting millions of dollars in assets, and that approximately $23 million was recovered for about 7,000 victims. Payments derived from the forfeited assets were distributed on October 23, 2026. The victims are people who paid their premiums to Medova.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Medova marketed itself as a third-party administrator and offered a level-funded group health plan for companies and their employees. Medova not only failed to pay health care claims but also diverted premium money elsewhere, including for the principals' own personal use. Because Medova failed to pay the claims, customers received payment demands from health care providers, causing financial strain for those without funds, and some customers had accounts sent to collections.
The Department of Labor previously filed a civil action against Medova, its subsidiaries and its principals, and the court appointed an independent fiduciary to take over administration of the health care claims. The fiduciary's final report indicated unpaid claims and expenses totaling $32 million. The civil forfeiture case, No. 21-1092, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.
The case was investigated by the Department of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration and litigated by Assistant U.S. Attorney Annette Gurney of the District of Kansas.
