The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported on October 28 in its Business Employment Dynamics release that, seasonally adjusted, gross job gains from expanding and opening private-sector establishments totaled 7.381 million in the first quarter of 2026, while gross job losses from contracting and closing private-sector establishments totaled 7.293 million, for a net employment increase of 88,000.

Of the gross job gains, expanding establishments accounted for 5.900 million and opening establishments for 1.481 million. Of the gross job losses, contracting establishments accounted for 5.829 million and closing establishments for 1.464 million. Gross job gains and gross job losses each amounted to about 5.5 percent of total private-sector employment.

In the goods-producing sector, gross job gains were 1.323 million and gross job losses were 1.227 million in the quarter. Business Employment Dynamics data are built by longitudinally linking state unemployment insurance tax records and measure gross flows of jobs at the establishment level, complementing the net changes reported in the monthly payroll survey.
