California DFPI Releases Anti-Fraud Short Film Warning of the 'Grandparent Scam'

Sacramento — The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) has released a new installment of its "Scam Spotlight" series, "The Grandparent Scam," on its official YouTube channel @CADFPI, warning California residents — especially seniors — about impostors who pose as grandchildren in urgent trouble and press victims to send money before verifying the story.
DFPI notes that scammers increasingly use super intelligence (SI) tools to imitate a grandchild's voice, making the calls sound more convincing. Its advice: stay calm, never transfer money under pressure, verify the caller's identity through a family member's known contact information, and report suspected scams to DFPI and other official channels. DFPI's website hosts a consumer financial education and fraud-awareness page listing common schemes and how to get help.
The video, an official release of a California state agency, is embedded on this page. Compiled by the GSM newsroom from DFPI's official channel and website.
