$1 Billion Southeast Treatment Plant Nutrient Reduction Project in San Francisco, California, Awarded to Jacobs and PCL Joint Venture on October 28

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has selected engineering firm Jacobs as the progressive design-build contractor for the Southeast Treatment Plant Nutrient Reduction Project. The project, an investment of about $1 billion, will be designed and built by a joint venture of Jacobs and PCL Construction, according to the announcement on October 28. The Southeast Treatment Plant is San Francisco's largest wastewater treatment facility and treats nearly 80 percent of the city's wastewater. The nutrient reduction project is one of the largest nutrient reduction investments made to date to protect San Francisco Bay; it will upgrade the plant with advanced treatment processes focused on reducing nutrients such as total inorganic nitrogen discharged into the Bay, improving Bay water quality. Jacobs Executive Vice President Tom Meinhart said the company brings decades of experience delivering critical wastewater projects for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, including earlier upgrades at the Southeast Treatment Plant, and that, supported by its strong California presence and global technical leadership, the team understands the regulatory and environmental factors shaping treatment strategies in the region. The project will also bring opportunities for local businesses and residents: Jacobs will support the commission's Social Impact Partnership by investing in local community health, education and workforce training and development, which is expected to deliver lasting economic and social benefits.
