Wednesday, October 28, 2026 · Education · GSM News

At the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln, Lancaster County, State Sen. Danielle Conrad heard testimony on Wednesday, October 28, from members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community about Nebraska students who are still not receiving services they need. The hearing was part of an interim study intended to identify what is happening in Nebraska schools and establish best practices. Parent Adam Wiblishouser testified that his fourth grader, in the Elkhorn school district, currently attends the Iowa School for the Deaf. Elizabeth Eynon-Kokrda said Nebraska does not have enough educational sign language interpreters to meet the needs of schools statewide. Another witness said that after the Nebraska School for the Deaf closed in 1998, the state replaced it with regional programs, but those services are still not enough.
