Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana: Judge Issues Temporary Injunction on Oct. 28 Clearing LSU Player Luis to Play: Eligible for Nov. 3 Opener, Hearing Again on Nov. 13

A Baton Rouge judge on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, issued a temporary injunction against Louisiana State University, head coach Will Wade and the Southeastern Conference, barring the conference from punishing the school for rostering RJ Luis and barring the school from keeping Luis off the floor on the basis of conference rules. It was Luis's second victory in Judge Ronald Johnson's courtroom: in August, Johnson issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA clearing him for the 2026-27 season, but an SEC rule adopted in August barring former professional players from returning to college rosters still kept him out. Luis, a former St. John's star, went undrafted in the 2025 draft and signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz, then was traded to the Boston Celtics and played in three preseason games, which triggered the conference ban. The new injunction clears him for the November 3 opener against the University of New Orleans (LSU New Orleans), and runs until November 13, when the parties will attend a preliminary injunction hearing and the judge will decide whether he remains eligible. Luis's attorney Tony Clayton said that during the injunction Luis can practice and play; if Wade refuses to play him, the attorney will ask the judge to hold him in contempt. Wade's side has previously made the school's position clear, and whether Luis actually takes the floor remains unknown.
