San Diego County Board Approves Next Phase of First-in-State Safety Net Bridge Program for Residents Losing CalFresh or Medi-Cal

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 · News · GSM News

San Diego County's Board of Supervisors in California voted on October 27 to move the Safety Net Bridge Program into its next phase, providing short-term support to residents who lose or face interruptions in CalFresh food benefits or Medi-Cal health coverage amid federal nutrition and health policy changes. The county says the program is the first of its kind in the state.

According to the county news center, the program was created together with health care providers, an advisory committee and community members, and is designed to catch residents when food or medical benefits are interrupted, so families do not go without food or medication while reapplying or transitioning.

CalFresh and Medi-Cal are the two main benefit programs for low-income Californians — the first provides monthly food assistance and the second covers medical care. With federal policy adjustments affecting some San Diego County residents, the board's approval moves the next phase of short-term bridge support forward.
