California State University Symposium Expands Vision of Student Success Beyond Graduation: Career Readiness, TRIO Support and Excelencia Honors

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Education · GSM News

The California State University (CSU) system reported on October 29 on its 2026 Student Success Symposium, where leaders from across the system explored how career readiness, new technology and the Student Success Framework are reshaping what success looks like for students beyond graduation.

The CSU update described the work of TRIO advisors across the system, who use federal grant funding to provide academic support and other services to first-generation, low-income and historically underrepresented students. It quoted the conviction that drives the advisors: there is talent at every socioeconomic level.

More than a dozen CSU campuses have earned the Seal of Excelencia from Excelencia in Education for ensuring access to excellence for Latinx and all students. Chico State and Stanislaus State earned the Seal for the first time this year, and Sacramento State earned the Intentionally Thriving Institution designation, indicating over six years of Seal certification.

The update also featured an episode of the All Things STEM Podcast in which Dr. Frank A. Gomez, executive director of the CSU's multi-campus consortium STEM-NET, spoke with Dr. Corin L. Bowen of Cal State LA about rethinking engineering education, from faculty burnout and student inequities to reimagining classrooms as thriving educational ecosystems.
