UC San Diego Researchers in San Diego County, California Map Coastal Cliff Retreat Hotspots with New Airborne Lidar Methods

UC San Diego, in San Diego County, California, reported on October 29 that researchers at its Scripps Institution of Oceanography have used new airborne lidar data to develop cutting-edge approaches to mapping the rate of California's eroding coastal cliffs, identifying hotspots for cliff retreat.
The same UC San Diego update covered a new partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) that will give students hands-on experience with the equipment and processes used to make computer chips, and new federal funding for the Center for Healthcare Cybersecurity, which will develop tools to map critical hospital network dependencies and expose potential vulnerabilities.
On campus affairs, UC San Diego's civic and voter empowerment action plan received a score of 400 and an Exceptional rating in the California Secretary of State's review, and the campus reminded voters to cast ballots by Election Day on Tuesday, November 3. Its books and culture section featured film and media studies scholar Silpa Mukherjee on the 50th anniversary of the movie Carrie and why audiences root for its villain.
