Palm Springs, California: James Vanderpool Appointed Interim City Manager Ahead of Scott Stiles' November 1 Retirement

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · California · GSM News

The City of Palm Springs in Riverside County, California, has appointed James "Jim" Vanderpool as interim city manager, succeeding Scott Stiles, whose retirement takes effect November 1. Vanderpool began work on October 22, overlapping with Stiles for the transition.

Vanderpool brings more than 30 years of municipal management experience. He served as city manager of Anaheim for more than five years, overseeing roughly 3,000 employees and a budget of about $2 billion, and before that was city manager of Buena Park for eight years.

Mayor Naomi Soto said in a statement that Vanderpool's experience will keep city services stable during the transition. The City Council has retained the search firm Bob Murray & Associates to run the national search for a permanent city manager, expected to take four to six months.

The council's October 28 agenda also included Vanderpool's employment agreement, which would take effect November 1 under California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) retired-annuitant rules at $156.24 per hour for a maximum of 960 hours per fiscal year, about $150,000 at the cap.

Palm Springs will operate under the interim city manager until the permanent appointment is made.
