UNHCR Warns as About 50,000 People Flee Ethiopia's Oromia Hostilities Into Moyale, Kenya

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, warned on October 28 that a humanitarian emergency is unfolding on the border between Ethiopia and Kenya, where thousands of people are seeking shelter after fleeing ongoing hostilities in Ethiopia's Oromia region. UNHCR cited reports that an estimated 50,000 people have crossed into Moyale in Kenya, with significant numbers arriving since October 22, and said many of those fleeing violence are women and children.

'The UN refugee agency has deployed an emergency team and is working closely with the Kenyan authorities and humanitarian partners to respond. We are also mobilizing emergency supplies for nearly 12,000 people while working to scale up assistance and identify safer locations away from the border for those who are fleeing violence,' spokesperson Eujin Byun said.

While some of the displaced are staying with relatives and host communities, others have sought shelter in schools and churches. Food remains the most urgent need, alongside safe drinking water, emergency shelter, sanitation and healthcare, the agency said, adding that safer accommodation options further away from the border are also being identified.
