India's Industrial Production Grows 6.7% in September: Manufacturing Up 7.6%, Electricity and Gas Up 11.2%, Mining Contracts 6.2%

India's Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released quick estimates in New Delhi on October 28 showing that the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew 6.7% year on year in September 2026, down from a revised 7.8% in August. The IIP stood at 124.3 in September, against 116.5 a year earlier. The series, with base year 2022-23, has been published since June 2026.
By sector, manufacturing grew 7.6%, easing from 8.6% in August, electricity and gas supply grew a strong 11.2%, while mining and quarrying contracted 6.2%, which analysts attributed to a late monsoon and base effects. Within manufacturing, 17 of 23 industry groups recorded positive growth. The top three contributors were manufacture of electrical equipment (up 33.9%), rubber and plastic products (up 19.9%) and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (up 19.0%), led by auto components, passenger cars and commercial vehicles, and by switchgear, UPS units and optical fibre connectors in electrical equipment.
On a use-based classification, capital goods output rose 10.4%, with intermediate goods and primary goods the top contributors to overall growth in September. Consumer durables grew 6.0%, while consumer non-durables rose just 1.4%.
