A YouGov survey conducted for the dpa news agency and released on October 29 found that 61% of German eligible voters hold a negative view of the United States and 59% hold a negative view of China. Both powers are viewed negatively overall in Germany, with China's negative share 2 percentage points lower than that of the United States.

The representative survey of 2,202 eligible voters was conducted from October 16 to 19, weeks before the U.S. midterm elections, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.09 percentage points at the 50% level.

Negative views of other countries and territories in the same survey were higher in several cases: Israel 62%, the Palestinian territories 54%, Iran 81% and Russia 74%.

Only 9% of respondents said they believe democracy in the United States basically functions well. Asked how to characterize the relationship, 19% called the United States a friend or ally of Germany, 22% a friendly rival, 11% a threat, and 28% said the United States is not friendly toward Germany.
