DOJ: Danbury Roofing Company Owner Mark Edwards Sentenced for Filing False Tax Returns That Hid More Than $1.3 Million in Receipts

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut announced on October 29 that Mark Edwards, 61, of Danbury, was sentenced in federal court in New Haven to two years of probation, the first six months of which he must spend in home detention, for filing false tax returns. U.S. District Judge Sarah F. Russell also ordered Edwards to pay a $25,000 fine and perform 100 hours of community service.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Edwards has owned and operated Mark Edwards Roofing and Siding, LLC, a roofing and construction business, since approximately 1998. Beginning at least as early as 2018, he failed to keep accurate records or perform bookkeeping for the business and provided his tax preparer with handwritten income and expense figures that substantially underreported his income. On his federal returns for the 2019 through 2023 tax years, he underreported gross receipts by at least $1.3 million, resulting in a tax loss to the IRS of $368,334.

Edwards has paid restitution of $368,334 to the IRS but still faces substantial tax penalties and interest. He pleaded guilty on March 25, 2026, to aiding in the preparation of a false tax return.

The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher W. Schmeisser.
