Bodum and CPSC Recall About 5.9 Million French Press Coffee Makers After 70 Breakage Reports and 48 Burns

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Life · GSM News

Bodum USA and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on October 29 the voluntary recall of about 5.9 million Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes.

According to the CPSC notice, the recall covers eight models: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya. Damaged or cracked glass carafes can break unexpectedly during use, posing a risk of serious burns. The commission received 70 reports of glass carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns to consumers.

The coffee makers were sold from 1974 through October 2026 at Target, Walmart and coffee and home goods stores nationwide, and online through Amazon, Bodum's website and other retailers, for about $15 to $65. They were made in Portugal and Thailand and imported by New York-based Bodum USA. The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most models and is engraved on the glass carafes along with product warnings.

The glass can be damaged when metal spoons or other metal utensils are used to stir coffee in the carafe. Bodum is not offering refunds or replacement coffee makers. Instead, affected consumers will receive a free Bodum-designed plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label, and the company is instructing owners to stop using metal utensils in the glass carafes and to avoid using cracked or damaged carafes. Going forward the products will be sold with the plastic spoon and the added warning label.

Consumers can request the remedy through Bodum's recall website or by calling 888-879-8213 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday. In its statement, Bodum said it takes any reports of injury extremely seriously and that the recall reinforces warnings against using a cracked or damaged carafe and against using metal spoons to stir coffee in the glass carafe, noting that the rate of reported breakage incidents is extremely low relative to the millions of units sold in the U.S. over decades.
