Follow-Up: Russell Brand's Wife Gives Evidence at His London Rape Trial, Calling Him Caring While Admitting Early Monogamy Was 'Difficult' for Him

The wife of British comedian and actor Russell Brand gave evidence on October 29 at his rape and sexual assault trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Laura Brand testified as a character witness as the trial entered its final stages, with the jury expected to begin deliberations next week.
Prosecutors charge Brand, 51, with three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted indecent assault, involving six women and alleged offences between 1999 and 2009, as he was rising to fame. Several complainants have already testified. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
Brand has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He says that although he was promiscuous in the past, all of his sexual encounters were consensual, and testified this week that consent is "non-negotiable" and more important than sex itself.
Laura Brand, who first dated Brand in 2006 at age 19, split with him in 2007, reconciled in 2015 and married him in 2017 — they have three children — described her husband as "caring, kind, a wonderful father to our children" and "an amazing, attentive husband," saying honesty has always been at the core of their marriage. She also testified that early in their relationship she discovered he was seeing other women: "It was clear it was difficult for him to be monogamous." She said Brand always respected her pace and wishes. When the defence tried to ask her view on the truth of the allegations, the judge intervened, noting she is not an expert witness.
