TelevisaUnivision Q3 Revenue Rises 9% to $1.38 Billion as the World Cup Lifts Mexico While U.S. Ad Revenue Falls 24%

TelevisaUnivision reported third-quarter results on October 29: total revenue rose 9 percent year over year to $1.38 billion, while adjusted OIBDA slipped 1 percent to $461.3 million. Net income was $57 million.
The company took a $372.1 million impairment charge against the value of its U.S. television stations, which pushed it to an operating loss of $119.3 million, compared with operating income of $265.3 million a year earlier.
The two markets diverged sharply. TelevisaUnivision held World Cup rights in Mexico, where revenue climbed 51 percent to $665.1 million — advertising up 19 percent to $389.1 million, and subscription and licensing revenue up 156 percent to $268.1 million on World Cup sublicensing and growth in the ViX streaming service's premium tier.
In the United States, where the company did not hold World Cup rights and Spanish-language audiences watched on Telemundo, U.S. revenue fell 14 percent to $714.5 million and advertising revenue dropped 24 percent to $327.5 million, reflecting competitive sports programming and a tough comparison against last year's Gold Cup.
CEO Daniel Alegre said the quarter reflected disciplined execution of the company's multiplatform strategy, with exceptional World Cup results in Mexico and momentum building in the U.S. behind its fall content slate, while its direct-to-consumer business delivered record revenue.
