Follow-Up: Putin Says a War With Europe Would Have 'No Winners,' Backs Restoring Ties and Warns Over the Baltic

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in Moscow on October 29, after a Russia-Africa summit, that Russia supports any steps aimed at restoring full-fledged relations with European countries, but that a war between Russia and Europe would have no winners. "We are ready, but we want no war with Europe," he said. "If things go too far, there will be no winners at all. Let no one forget that."

Putin praised the phone calls he received earlier in the week from Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre — a conversation GSM reported on October 27 — calling them a step in the right direction. He also said European countries had not achieved their goal of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia.

On the Baltic Sea, Putin warned that obstructing navigation there could create a situation resembling the Strait of Hormuz. "We don't want that, but we will respond to any challenge," he said.

Russia's war in Ukraine is in its fourth year and relations with Europe remain at a low point. Putin's remarks came after the calls with Stubb and Støre, in which the sides agreed to keep in touch.
