Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Life · GSM News

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department announced on October 29 that it will close a total of 20 acres of Great Bay, near Durham in Strafford County, New Hampshire, to shellfish harvest to continue oyster reef restoration work. The closure area comprises two restoration sites: 5 acres near Woodman Point and 15 acres near Nannie Island. The closure runs from Sunday, November 1, 2026, through October 31, 2031, a period of five years. The department said only the 20-acre restoration area will be closed; the remaining Nannie Island oyster reef and the Woodman Point oyster reef will remain open to recreational harvesters. The restoration is conducted by the department in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy and the University of New Hampshire, and the five-year closure is intended to increase the likelihood of successful restoration and enhancement of the oyster population.
