Salem, Marion County, Oregon: State Treasury Mails $7 Million in Unclaimed Money to About 13,000 People in October; Checks from $50 to $10,000, No Claim Needed

The Oregon State Treasury in Salem, Marion County, is mailing about $7 million in unclaimed funds to about 13,000 people across the state this month through its 'Checks Without Claims' program, with individual checks ranging from $50 to $10,000. Under the program, the Treasury identifies the owners of forgotten funds and mails checks directly, without requiring recipients to file a claim first. State Treasurer Elizabeth Steiner announced the arrangement on October 23; the funds were reported to the state in 2024 by businesses and organizations that were unable to return the money to its rightful owners. The money comes from sources including uncashed checks, forgotten bank accounts, tax refunds, payroll checks and account balances. The Treasury said residents receiving the October payments should have received a notification letter in September, and that the state's unclaimed-property website does not necessarily show whether someone is on the automatic payment list. Even residents who do not receive a check this month may have other funds held in their name, which can be searched for free in the state's official unclaimed-property database and claimed online. The Treasury estimates about $1 billion in unclaimed funds remains held statewide; there is no deadline to claim, and the process is free.
