Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island: Town Receives $3.24 Million Affordable Housing Award on October 29 for 36 Modular Three-Bedroom Homes Priced at $350,000 to $400,000

The town of Middletown, in Newport County, Rhode Island, received a major affordable housing award on the morning of October 29, when Gov. Dan McKee and the state Executive Office of Housing announced a $3,239,964 award at a ceremony on the project site across from Town Hall. The project, named Aquidneck Green, will be developed by Marathon Development LLC using modular construction to build 36 three-bedroom homes, including detached, duplex and triplex homes. Five homes will be reserved for households earning up to 80% of area median income, with proposed sale prices of $353,800; the remaining 31 homes will be reserved for households earning up to 120% of area median income, with proposed sale prices of $399,999. Of the 36 homes, two will meet Type A accessibility standards, one will meet Type B standards, and all 36 will be built to Type C accessibility standards. Local officials said the homes will be deed restricted, meaning they will remain affordable permanently. No start date for the project was announced, but local officials said they hope to get going as soon as possible. The award is part of $12.7 million in second-round awards under the $20 million, bond-funded Housing 2030 Entry-Level Homeownership Program; with this round, all funding from the 2024 housing bond dedicated to the program's homeownership initiatives has been allocated. The awards will support 207 new homes statewide, of which 161 directly funded homes will be priced under $400,000 and affordable to households earning at or below 120% of area median income.
