Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida: Department of Education Reports Financial Aid Website Data Breach on Oct. 29: Nearly 5 Million People May Be Affected, Including Social Security Numbers

The Florida Department of Education in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, issued a news release on October 29 reporting a data breach that could affect nearly 5 million people, with compromised personal information including Social Security numbers. The department said staff learned on October 19 of 'unauthorized criminal access' involving the Florida Student Financial Aid website. The department said it took steps to stop and contain the unauthorized activity and secure its systems, and believes the breach was limited to the financial aid website, although some websites and online services may be temporarily disrupted during the response. The department stressed that students' current financial aid is not at risk, that the incident will not delay department financial aid or tuition payments, and that it will not affect eligibility for department scholarships, grants or student loans. The department notified Florida law enforcement and is working with the Florida Digital Service, and, as required by state law, reported the incident to the state Attorney General's Office. The department said it will remain transparent and will release more information once details are verified.
