Georgia: Tariff Relief Promise Reported Oct. 29 in Talks on Audi's $4 Billion Plant: 200,000 SUVs a Year, About 4,500 Jobs, Volkswagen Supervisory Board Decision Still Pending

Reuters reported on October 29, citing two people briefed on the matter, that the Trump administration has promised tariff relief in talks with Audi to help secure the Volkswagen luxury brand's $4 billion assembly plant investment in Georgia. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are private, said the U.S. plans to offer a broad tariff relief program for automakers making significant investments in U.S. production, with details possibly unveiled in the coming weeks. Audi has pushed the U.S. to cut the 15% tariffs it pays on imports from the European Union to 7.5%, while the U.S. Department of Commerce is expected to agree to around 10%. Audi Chief Executive Gernot Doellner stood alongside Trump at a campaign rally in Georgia on Sunday, where Trump said the automaker planned to build a plant producing 200,000 sport utility vehicles annually. Audi said the investment will create approximately 4,500 jobs, with construction scheduled to begin next year and production starting in the early 2030s, but Volkswagen's supervisory board must still make a final investment decision.
