Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky: Gatton Foundation Donates $30 Million to University of Kentucky Arboretum on Oct. 29: New Education Building, Expanded Visitor Center and Parking

The Bill Gatton Foundation announced on October 29 a $30 million commitment to the University of Kentucky – Lexington-Fayette County Arboretum, the State Botanical Garden of Kentucky, for new and renovated facilities and landscape improvements. University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto announced the gift at a celebration at the Arboretum that day, joined by foundation trustees, university and city leaders, donors, volunteers and community members. The gift will fund the following improvements: expanding the Dorotha Smith Oatts Visitor Center for expanded event use; a new education building with dedicated classrooms and an immersive exhibit experience; an integrated landscape between the visitor center and the education building; a reconfigured entrance with improved parking and accessibility; enhancements along the Walk Across Kentucky; and relocating operational facilities off-site. The new education building will be named in honor of Scott Smith, former dean of the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Foundation trustee Danny Dunn said Gatton loved his home state of Kentucky, that parks are places where children and adults alike can enjoy nature, and that the Arboretum's educational mission is a major beneficiary of the gift.
