A "fairy chimney" rock formation collapsed in Türkiye's Cappadocia tourist region on the afternoon of October 29, killing three visitors and injuring five. The accident happened during the Republic Day holiday, when the area was crowded with tourists.

The collapse occurred at about 3:15 p.m. local time near a parking area at the entrance of the Göreme Open-Air Museum in Nevşehir province, after days of heavy rain triggered a landslide and part of the rock formation gave way onto visitors below. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced a judicial investigation, and Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi said search-and-rescue work had ended and the area had been closed.

The three dead were identified as a Turkish couple, Fatih Eray Tuna, 31, and his wife Begüm Çetinkaya Tuna, 31, and a French national, Cynthia Houpert, 37. Health officials said five injured people were taken to hospital; four have been discharged and one remains under observation.

Cappadocia is famed for its volcanic rock formations and cave churches. The Göreme National Park and Rock Sites of Cappadocia were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1985, and the region received about 4.5 million visitors in 2025.
