Los Angeles County, California: LA General Medical Center Launches E-Bike Safety Initiative With 100 Free Helmets and a Bilingual Safety Guide

LA General Medical Center, in the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, launched an electric bicycle safety initiative on October 29 — "100 Helmets for a Safer Community" — in response to a rising number of e-bike injuries treated at the hospital.

The county-run Level I trauma center will give away 100 helmets to community members, teach proper fitting on site, and release a bilingual English-Spanish E-Bike Safety Guide covering riding rules, protective gear and common injury prevention.

Hospital officials said e-bikes' speed and weight make head and bone injuries far more likely than with conventional bicycles in a fall or a collision with a vehicle, and that a properly fitted, certified helmet is the most direct protection. Chief Executive Officer Jorge Orozco, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brad Spellberg and surgery director Dr. Kenji Inaba took part in the launch.

LA General Medical Center has 606 beds, is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Southern California, and is one of the busiest trauma centers in the Los Angeles County health system.
