San Diego County, California: Flu Season Arrives Early With Two Children Dead This Month and 11 Flu Deaths Countywide This Season

Friday, October 30, 2026 · California · GSM News

San Diego County, California, health officials reported on October 29 that this year's flu season has arrived early: two children in the county have died of influenza this month — a previously healthy 11-year-old and a 6-month-old infant with complex medical conditions. Total flu deaths in the county this season have reached 11.

County health officials said flu seasons usually peak in mid-winter, and the early timing of cases and deaths this year shows transmission is already under way. Children, older adults, pregnant people and those with chronic conditions face the highest risk of severe illness and death.

The county urged residents to get this season's flu vaccine as soon as possible at clinics, pharmacies and county public health centers. People with symptoms such as high fever or shortness of breath should seek care promptly, and those diagnosed should stay home to avoid spreading the virus at school or work.

Officials also reminded residents that COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) circulate alongside flu in the fall and winter, and that hand washing and masking in crowded indoor settings remain effective precautions.
