California: Attorney General Reaches $1.8 Million Settlement With Lyft Over Sale of App Users' Personal Information Without an In-App Opt-Out

Friday, October 30, 2026 · California · GSM News

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a $1.8 million settlement with ride-hailing company Lyft resolving allegations that the company violated the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

The Department of Justice found that since mid-2023, Lyft had sold and shared users' personal information within its mobile app to third parties for targeted advertising without offering consumers an in-app way to opt out of the sale of their information. To exercise that right, consumers had to detour through the company's privacy policy webpage and re-enter their personal information.

Under the settlement, Lyft will pay $1.8 million in civil penalties, provide an in-app opt-out of the sale of personal information, and notify consumers of their privacy rights.

The case grew out of a geolocation data enforcement sweep the Department of Justice opened in March 2025. The settlement marks the department's ninth enforcement action under the CCPA.
